Folkard Takes National Record
Leamington’s GB international archer Naomi Folkard last weekend broke the national record for the ladies’ long metric round, while competing in the World Record status FITA Star at Meriden’s Forest Ground.
The competition which attracted some of the country’s top archers, involved 3 dozen arrows at each of four distances (90, 70, 50 and 30 metres for the men and 70, 60, 50 and 30 metres for the ladies). The cold wet weather resulted in 12 archers not starting the event and a further 20 retiring before the end.
Folkard made an excellent start with 326 for 70m and 343 for 60m, giving her 669 for the long metric, to put 3 points on the national record set in 2003 by Alison Williamson. With 322 for 50m and 350 for 30m Folkard finished with an excellent 1341, well ahead of the rest of the field. Nicky Hunt (Deben) was second on 1248, and Rebecca Martin (Trent Valley) was third with 1230.
In the men’s compound event Warwickshire’s Adam Ravenscroft (Bowflights, Birmingham) finished in a commendable fifth place with 1364. The winner was Duncan Busby (Blackthorne) on 1409.
Other Warwickshire archers finishing in top 10 positions were: (ladies recurve) Maria Law (Meriden) 5th 1097, Anna Tillman (Meriden) 7th 1050 and Wendy Baird (Meriden) 10th 1012: (ladies compound) Georgie Brown (Meriden) 6th 1350; (gents recurve) Craig Bowley (Meriden) 9th 1203; and (gents compound) Clive Jeacock (Meriden) 10th 1343. Junior recurve archer Jacob Vick (Meriden)put in a creditable 1011 for the full senior men’s distances.6 June 2011
Folkard and White Secure Selection for World Championships in Turin
After four days of intense competition over two weekends of Selection Shoots, two of the three Warwickshire archers invited to compete have secured their places in the team for the Archery World Championships in Italy in July: recurve archer Naomi Folkard from Leamington and compound archer Chris White from Rugby. A third Warwickshire man, Adam Ravenscroft (Bowflights, Birmingham) narrowly missed out on a place.
Six archers in each discipline were invited to compete, but only the top four in the standings after Day 3 , continued to fight it out for the three available places. The format each weekend was a 12 dozen FITA round over 4 distances followed by a day of round robin head-to-head matches. On Day 4 recurve archers finished with an additional 36 arrows at 70metres. The scoring system was complex, with scores being adjusted and bonus points given for match wins and the achievement of high target scores.
In the ladies’ recurve competition relative newcomer Amy Oliver (Dearne Valley) got off to a flying start and at the end of Day 2 had amassed 1673.47 points. Folkard lay in second place with 1598.37, not far ahead of her team mates in the Beijing Olympics, 5 times Olympian Alison Williamson (Long Mynd) on 1591.33, and Charlotte Burgess (Bruntwood) 1579.40. Day 3, despite the difficult windy conditions, saw Folkard put in a ladies’ FITA score of 1253 substantially higher than her rivals. She continued in good form on Day 4, but although she reduced Oliver’s lead she finished a good second. (Oliver 3539.80, Folkard 3500.73, Williamson 3445.57 and Burgess 3364.57).
The men’s compound competition was closer and positions changed throughout. After Day 2 the standings were James Bingham (Birstall) 2421, Liam Grimwood (Blackthorn) 2417, White and Ravenscroft both 2413 and Duncan Busby (Blackthorn) 2412. White shot consistently well throughout and maintained third place after Day 3. Bingham maintained his first place, but Busby jumped to second place and Grimwood, the World Championship silver medallist in 2009, dropped to fourth. Ravenscroft dropped to fifth place and, under the event rules, dropped out of the competition. On Day 4 both Busby and White shot superbly to finish in first and second places respectively with 4680.00 and 4667.00. Meanwhile Bingham narrowly took third place from Grimwood, 4658 to 4654.
It is a strong GB team of experienced international archers going to Turin. The recurve ladies team of Folkard, Williamson and Oliver won the silver medal at the Commonwealth Games last year and are intending to do well.

Success for Warwickshire in First County Match
Warwickshire won both the recurve and compound trophies in the first county match of the season against Lancashire and Cheshire, despite being short of some of its top archers. The home match was at Meriden’s Forest Ground, and despite the cool, breezy conditions, scores were good for the 12 dozen arrow FITA rounds (4 doz at each of 90, 70, 50 and 30 metres for the men and 70, 60, 50 and 30 metres for the ladies).
The Warwickshire recurve team comprising 4 men and two ladies amassed 8288 points. Lancashire making a gallant last ditch effort to win pulled back 15 points on the last distance, to finish on 8287 just one point behind Warwickshire. Cheshire were third on 6402.
The Warwickshire compounds, 3 men and 2 ladies, finished on 6724, ahead of Lancashire 6693 and Cheshire 6402.
The Warwickshire teams comprised:
Recurves - Craig Bowley (Meriden) 1256; Bob Lowe (Meriden) 1214; Pete James (Meriden) 1212; Brian Tustin (Leamington) 1150; Natalie Gee (Sutton Coldfield) 1165; Leah Innocent (Coventry) 1157 and Karen Atkins (Bowflights, Birmingham) 1134.
Compounds - John Robbins (Meriden) 1366; Brett Walker (Meriden) 1355, Gavin Shaw (Meriden) 135; Georgie Brown (Meriden) 1351 and Janette Ross (Meriden) 1297.

Warwickshire Archers win First Major Shoot of the Outdoor Season

Folkard at the World Cup 2010, Ogden USA
Leamington GB international recurve archer Naomi Folkard and Birmingham compound Adam Ravenscroft (Bowflights) made a spectacular start to the outdoor season last weekend at Meriden’s world record status FITA Star tournament, both winning their class. This first major event of the season attracted numerous top GB archers, making competition fierce.
All archers shot the 12 dozen FITA rounds (3 dozen arrows at each of 70, 60, 50 and 30 metres for the ladies; and 90, 70, 60 and 50 metres for the men). Weather conditions were generally good, although there was a slight breeze with rain and hail towards the end.
In the ladies’ recurve event Folkard led throughout to finish with an excellent 1316, ahead of Rebecca Martin (Trent Valley) 1260 and Jeanetta McLean ( Brent Valley) 1246. As well as first place she took all four distance awards.
Ravenscroft had to fight harder for gold. After 90 metres he was lying in third place with 342 behind James Bingham (Birstall) 344 and Chris White (Rugby) 343. After 70 metre he pulled up to share second place with White, both on 695, behind Liam Grimwood (Blackthorne) who had spurted into the lead with 696. After 50 metres Ravenscroft was sharing first place with Grimwood (both 1048), with White and Bingham both hard on their heels with 1047 and 1045 respectively. The last distance produced a very close result in which Ravenscroft came out on top with 1408, ahead of Grimwood and White both 1407 and Bingham 1400. Ravenscroft beat White’s existing county record of 1405. (White still holds the national record with 1415.)
A number of other Warwickshire archers, all from Meriden) produced outstanding scores: recurves Pete James 1246 and Bob Lowe 1220; and compounds Brett Walker 1381, John Robbins 1376, Gavin Shaw 1344, Paul Taylor 1338 and Colin Geenes 1334. Warwickshire juniors Jack Brookes (Sutton Coldfield) and Jamie Warner (Meriden) both put in sound performances. Jack scored 1085 to be the top junior shooting the gents FITA, and Jamie scored 870 for the ladies round.
Folkard is currently in Antalya, Turkey where she hopes to do well in the first leg of the European Grand Prix.

Folkard Misses Medal by Millimetres

Folkard taking aim
Leamington’s GB archer Naomi Folkard was distraught when she missed out on a medal by a matter of millimetres in a single arrow shoot-off at the European Indoor Championships in Spain last week.
In a field which included some of the world’s best recurve ladies Naomi shot 578 in the FITA 18 ranking round (5 dozen arrows at a small 3spot face over 18 metres.) She was not able to equal her national record of 588 set earlier this month, but nevertheless she qualified in third place behind Anna Bomboeva (Russia) 584 and veteran Natalia Valeeva (Italy) 584. This earned Folkard a bye in the first round of head to head matches.
Folkard’s first match was in the 1/8th elimination round against Natalia Lesniak (Poland). She won in 3 sets (of 3 arrows) 30-28, 29-28, and 29-20 which gave her a 6-0 point win. She then went into the ¼ final to meet former world number 1, Natalya Erdyniyeva (Russia), whom she again beat 6-0 in a close match (29-28,29-28 and 29-27). Folkard struggled a little in her semi final match against Valeeva who was shooting at her best and as a result lost this match 6-0 (27-30, 27-29 and 28-29).
This left Folkard to fight for the bronze medal against Coby Hurkmans (Netherlands), who had qualified in fourth place with 577, just one point behind her. It was a close, nail-biting match. Hurkmans shot 28 for her first 3 arrows against Folkard’s 27 to gain the first 2 points, and went on to gain another 2 points with 30 to 29in the second set. Folkard replied with 30 to 28 to bring the points score to 4 -2. The fourth set was tied 29-29 leaving Hurkmans with 5-3 lead, but in the final set Folkard responded with a perfect 30 to Hurkmans 27 so levelling the score at 5 points each. This meant a tie-break, a single arrow shoot-off in which the arrow closest to the centre of the target would win the bronze medal. Both archers shot a 9, but Hurkmans was judged to be the winner by millimetres.
Folkard who is a former silver medallist at the event and is the current national indoor champion was very disappointed to finish fourth. She said: “I am shooting well and should have won a medal. I was a bit unlucky with the sets system as I actually beat Coby on total arrow score in the bronze medal match by 154 points to 151 points, and I have to take some satisfaction from that. The system sometimes works for you, but not this time.”
Tatyana Boroday (Russia) won gold from Valeeva, and again this match went to a single arrow shoot off with Boroday’s 10 beating Valeeva’s 9.29 March 2011
National Record for Folkard

Folkard preparing to shoot in the
Commonwealth Games last year
Leamington’s Naomi Folkard used the West Midlands Indoor Archery Championships last week to warm up for the European Indoor Championships in Spain later this month. She won the ladies’ recurve event and put two points on to her own national record.
The tournament held at Evesham, and combined with the Worcestershire County and Open Championships, was well attended and attracted some top international archers to shoot the world record status FITA 18 round (5 dozen arrows at a 3 spot 40 cm face over 18 metres).
Folkard shot two rounds, one in each session. (Although both scores count for national record purposes only the first score counts for the championship.) Her first score of 577 was excellent, easily enough to earn her first place, ahead of Rebecca Martin (Trent Valley), a very promising Staffordshire junior 564 and Sue Davis (Redditch) 550. In her second round Folkard shot a superb 588, beating her own national record of 586 achieved at the World Championships in March 2007. She is now hoping to reproduce this form next week in Spain.
Another Warwickshire archer, Bob Lowe (Meriden) made his mark at Evesham. Finishing on 547, he won the men’s recurve championship, ahead of Pete Williams (Evesham) 536 and Kevin Gayton (Redditch) 530. Club mate Chris Trolan was not far behind on 525.
The ladies’ and men’s compound champions were both from Worcestershire, Sheila Harris (Redhill) 548 and Andy Rikunenko (Redditch) 585.

Leamington & Meriden dominate County Field Championships

Folkard shooting in the 2009 World Games

where she won the bronze medal
The County Field Championships were held at Meriden’s Forest Ground last Sunday. Despite the somewhat uninviting cold wet weather, there was a good turnout of archers with some excellent scores for the 24 target FITA round (a variety of target faces at distances up to 60m with maximum score 432). It was an interesting, largely wooded course, although fairly flat.
The ladies’ recurve championship was won by two-times Olympian Naomi Folkard (Leamington) with an excellent 352. Folkard is primarily a target archer, but nevertheless excels at field archery and last year won silver in the World Field Championships in Hungary. Second place went to Angela Cave (Leamington) 211, Anna Tillman (Meriden) was third 164.
Brian Tustin (Leamington) won the men’s recurve competition with an excellent 320. Meriden’s Bob Lowe and Stuart Wood-Edens came second and third respectively with 298 and 276.
Meriden dominated the compound championships. Janette Ross won the ladies’ event with 327, although Christie Westman (Birstall) shooting as a visitor amassed 353 points.
Competition in the men’s compound competition was fierce, and the top three places went to Meriden archers. Adam Ravenscroft (387) came out on top. John Robbins (377) was second and Paul Taylor (372) was third.
Other results were as follows:
| Gents Barebow | 1st John Williams (Meriden) | 229 |
| Girls Under15 Recurve | 1st Bethany Roberts (Leamington) | 124 |
| Boys Under 18 Recurve | 1st Jacob Vick (Meriden) | 255 |
| 2nd Jamie Warner (Meriden) | 212 | |
| 3rd Niall Joy (Leamington) | 138 | |

Folkard Wins in Las Vegas
A number of Warwickshire archers entered the prestigious annual 3day indoor archery tournament in Las Vegas. A massive event which attracted over 1500 archers from all parts of the world, it involved a large number of competition categories covering all bow types. Archers shot just 2½ dozen arrows each day over 18 metres, at a special 40cm ‘Vegas’ face in the form of a 3 spot triangle.
Leamington’s Naomi Folkard and Rugby’s Chris White shot in the main championships (ladies recurve and gents compound respectively). Both shot well throughout.
Folkard scored very consistently, amassing 289 points each day (maximum 300). After the first day she was in second place behind Carina Christiansen (Denmark) who shot 292, the only day score during the event to top Folkard’s. On the second day Christiansen could only make 279 giving a total of 571, and dropped down to third position behind Folkard 578 and Jennifer Nichols (USA) 573. On the final day Folkard increased her lead finishing on 867. Christiansen pulled back into second place with 858 and Katuna Lorig (Russia) made third, also with 858 but fewer ‘X’s. Nichols with 857 ended up fourth. GB’s Athens bronze medallist Alison Williamson, with 850, pulled up from 6th to 5th place.
Competition in the men’s compound championship was fierce with an amazing 13 of the 185 contestants shooting perfect scores of 900. White was unlucky to drop a point on the first day which with 42 archers shooting the maximum 300 on the day, and others on 299 with more ‘x’s tham him, left him well down the standings. However he fought back and with no more arrows outside the ten ring, he pulled up to 27th on day 2, and with a final total of 899 and 84 ‘x’s finished 15th . The men’s compound champion was Reo Wilde (USA).
Other Warwickshire archers shooting in the non-championship classes were: recurves Pete James 832 and Chris Trolan 805, both from Meriden; and compounds Adam Ravenscroft (Bowflights, Birmingham) 894, John Robbins (Meriden) 889 and Mark Cowburn (Meriden) 871.
Folkard is delighted with this result and will be working hard to further improve her indoor scores before the European Indoor Championships to be held in Spain next month.

Good Shooting at County Championships
The Warwickshire County Indoor Archery Championships, held last Sunday at the Harry Mitchell Sports Centre in Warley, saw some excellent shooting. The well attended event incorporated both the County and West Midlands Junior Championships. All archers shot the Portsmouth round of 5 dozen arrows at a 60 cm face over 20 yards. The awards were presented by GB international and two time Olympian Naomi Folkard, who was the Lady Paramount for the day and also took part in the competition.
The senior championship awards were very much dominated by Meriden archers. However, Folkard, shooting for Leamington, took the ladies’ recurve championship with 587. Natalie Gee (Sutton Coldfield) was second with 555 and Anna Tillman (Meriden) third with 544.
Meriden archers took the top three places in the men’s recurve championship. Bob Lowe shot an excellent 583. Chris Trolan and Stuart Wood-Edens both finished on 563, but Trolan with 60 hits to Wood-Edens’ 59 was awarded silver. Leamington’s Malcolm Griffin finished fourth with 560, but was unlucky not to be in the medals as he was actually blown off the line when he failed to shoot an arrow within the permitted time.
The senior recurve team event went to Meriden, the team comprising Bob Lowe, Chris Trolan, Stuart Wood-Edens and Bob Watson (556).
The ladies’ compound champion was Janette Ross (Meriden) with 547. Because of the relatively small entry in this section no further medals were awarded.
The men’s compound event was won by John Robbins (Meriden) with 587. Club mate James Scott took silver with 568.
The gents’ longbow competition was won by Robert Blakemore (Sutton Coldfield) with 286.
The highest score of the day, 588, was attained by a visiting recurve, Jon Nott (Saints and Sinners, Worcs)
The junior championships also produced some fine scores. Jack Brookes (Sutton Coldfield) with 558 was the overall recurve boy champion in both the county and regional events. Rugby’s Nancy Chen was the Warwickshire Girl Champion, but Rebecca Martin (Trent Valley) who, still under 16, amassed a very creditable 571, was the West Midlands Girl Champion.

Warwickshire Archers Excel at National Indoor Championships
A weekend of national tournaments at the International Centre, Telford, Shropshire brought success for a number of Warwickshire archers. The Junior National Indoor Championships was shot alongside the new ‘Back to Back’ head-to-head tournament on Saturday, with the Senior National Indoor Championships taking place on Sunday. It was a full weekend of competition which attracted top archers from all parts of the UK, and in all three events there were exceptional performances by local archers.
Junior National Indoor Championships

Isobel Roberts warming up
10 year old Isobel Roberts (Leamington) won the girls’ under 12 group with a score of 457, comfortably ahead of second placed Isobel Ager (OOBAC) 439.
Jacob Vick (Meriden) very narrowly missed out on gold in the boys’ under 16 group when he finished on an excellent 573, just one point behind Luke Bow (Saints & Sinners).
Other creditable performances came from Jack Brookes (Sutton Coldfield) 5th with 571 in the closely fought boys under 18 section; Jamie Warner with 531 also in the boys’ under 18s; Michael McCarthy (Leamington) 4th with 437 in the boys’ under 12s and Nancy Chen (Rugby) with 508 in the girls’ under 16s.
Both Jacob Vick and Jack Brookes made the four member West Midlands junior team together with Luke Bow and Rebecca Martin (Trent Valley). Their combined score of 2289 earned first place for the West Midlands, with Southern Counties second on 2268 and Grand Western third on 2243.
Back to Back Tournament
The first ever ‘Back to Back’ tournament was run alongside the Junior Championships. Shot at a 3 spot 40 cm face over 18 metres, it followed the same group round robin format as the well established Amsterdam ‘Face to Face’ tournament. (The round robin elimination rounds produce four archers in each discipline to proceed to semi final and then medal matches.) Two Warwickshire archers shot superbly winning their categories: Naomi Folkard (Leamington) ladies’ recurve and Adam Ravenscroft (Bowflights, Birmingham) men’s compound.

Naomi Folkard pictured
on the Sunday
In the elimination rounds Folkard shot 588 and 587 (maximum just 600) for the 5 dozen arrows, both of which scores surpassed the existing national record of 586, held by herself. Unfortunately the competition did not have record status. She continued on top form to easily win all her final matches and beat Gill Newland (Corsham) for gold.
Ravenscroft provided the shock of the day when he pipped double Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Duncan Busby (Blackthorn) in the final match.
Senior National Indoor Championships
Warwickshire was well represented in the Senior Championships, with archers from Birmingham University, Bowflights, Leamington, Meriden, Rugby and University of Warwick. Top placings went to Naomi Folkard who maintained her top form for the second day to win the ladies’ recurve championship, and to Meriden archers who came second in the mixed recurve team event (Pete James 553, Jacob Vick (Junior) 526, Stuart Wood-Edens 521 and Anna Tillman (482).
In the 18 m qualification round Folkard shot 586 to equal her existing national record. She then stormed through her head to head matches. In the final she met Swedish international Jenny Jeppsson. Only dropping one point, she won in 3 sets 29 to 28, 30 to 27 and 30 to 28, which gave her 6 points to nil. Former GB international Vlada Priestman (Nethermoss) finished third.
In the men’s compound event Adam Ravenscroft finished 7th .
European Indoor Championships
Folkard, who is currently shooting superbly, has qualified and been selected for the GB team at the European Championships to be held in March in Spain. However, the event is to be self funded, and she is now struggling to get the necessary funds together.6 December 2010
Ten Years At The Top
Leamington’s international archer Naomi Folkard has topped the recurve ladies section of the national target rankings for the tenth time. Rugby compound Chris White was only very narrowly beaten into second place in his discipline after 10 consecutive years at the top.
The rankings were based on the total of best scores from 3 ladies/gents FITA rounds and 2 FITA 70 rounds, all of World record status. In addition archers were required to compete in 2 WRS Olympic rounds.
Folkard first topped the rankings as a junior in 2000. She was unable to compete fully in 2003 because of ‘A’ levels, but has otherwise maintained the number one position. This year she finished on 5257 points, ahead of Athens bronze medallist, Alison Williamson (Long Mynd) 5226, Charlotte Burgess (Bruntwood) 5127 and Amy Oliver (Dearne Valley) 5112.
White with 5624 points was nudged into second place by Duncan Busby (Blackthorn), the Commonwealth Games gold medallist, with 5626. Liam Grimwood (Blackthorn) finished on 5595 and Andy Rikunenko (Redditch) on 5586.
Other Warwickshire archers making the top 20 in their respective disciplines are lady compound Philippa Lowe (Meriden)14th=: gent recurve Craig Bowley (Meriden)18th: gents compound Adam Ravenscroft (Bowflights) 5535 7th, and John Robbins (Meriden) 5459 18th.18 October 2010
Leamington Hosts National Series Final with Resounding Success
The Grand Final of the Archery GB National Series, which was held last Sunday in Leamington’s Jephson Gardens, was a resounding success in all respects. The event, now in its second year, and attracting the country’s, and in fact some of the world’s best archers, provided something of a public spectacle. Two of the four winners are local archers: recurve Naomi Folkard, born and bred in Leamington; and compound Chris White, a former pupil of Trinity School in Leamington, now living in Rugby.

Naomi Folkard, Nichola Simpson and Chris White
Archers have been battling it out over the year at five qualification tournaments for the top four places in each of 4 categories: recurve and compound for men and women. The finals involved the new stimulating and pressurised international head-to-head format, enjoyed by archers and non-archers alike, with points for each end of 3 arrows (2 for a win and 1 for a draw). The event was designed to help bring archery to the public, to bring a level of professionalism to the sport in the UK, and to create a high profile stage to develop our British athletes. It was much needed practice for archers who will next month be jetting off to India for the Commonwealth Games, on the path to the 2012 Olympics.
In the women’s recurve competition Naomi knocked out Sam Meadows (Chiltern) in her morning semi-final match by 6 points to 0. Defending champion Charlotte Burgess (Bruntwood) beat Athens Olympic bronze medallist Alison Williamson (Long Mynd) 7-1. The afternoon’s gold medal match between Folkard and Burgess was tense, stretching into the seventh set. Folkard shot a 10 with her first arrow which helped her to a first set advantage, but Burgess bounced back and went into a 4:2 lead after 3 sets, before Folkard turned it in her favour again. In the final end Folkard’s 9-9-10 to Burgess’s 9-8-8 eventually clinched the match. Williamson won the bronze medal match 7-1.
In the men’s compound event Chris a former World Champion beat Andy Rikunenko (Redditch), the current European champion, in his semi final match 6-2. Meanwhile Liam Grimwood (Blackthorn), world championship silver medallist in 2009, also beat Duncan Busby (Blackthorn) 6-2. The gold medal match between White and Grimwood was a closely fought contest, but after winning the first set White always maintained the upper hand. Going into the last end Grimwood had pulled back to 6-4, but White finished with a superb 10-10-9 to Grimwood’s 9-10-9 to clinch victory. Busby beat Rikunenko 7-1 for the bronze medal.
Results in the other disciplines were:
Men’s recurve – 1 Simon Terry (Chorley) 2 Rob Hallworth (Bruntwood) 3 Laurence Godfrey (Cleve) 4 Mike Peart (Deben)
Ladies’ compound – 1 Nicola Simpson (Oxford) 2 Andrea Gales (Woking) 3 Lucy O’Sullivan (Jersey) 4 Dani Brown (Aire Valley)
Folkard, delighted with the result said: “It’s lovely to win the National Series gold medal, but especially satisfying to do it here in Leamington”.
Chris praised the organiser, Jon Nott, and said: “He’s chosen a great venue here in Leamington, and it’s been a great day all round.”
With no official funding for the event, it was run entirely with the aid of sponsorship. This was not only from archer manufacturers etc, but also from a number of local organisations including Warwick District Council, Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership and Recaro.

Folkard & White Perform Well in Shanghai
Two Warwickshire archers, Leamington’s recurve Naomi Folkard and Rugby’s compound Chris White, performed well in the fourth and last leg of the FITA World Cup in Shanghai last week.
Both are now hopeful of wild card places in the World Cup final to be held in Edinburgh later this month.
Folkard, who had a slow start to the season has been steadily improving. She qualified in ninth place in Shanghai with an excellent 653 for 6 dozen arrows at 70 metres. She easily won her matches against Deonne Bridger (Australia) and Kristine Esebua (Georgia), but finally went out to Hui Ju Wu (Chinese Taipei).
White shot a superb 703 to qualify in 7th place. After a bye in the first head-to head round, he was unlucky to go out in just the second round, with a tie and a single arrow shoot off, to Julio Fierro (Mexico). However, he gained some compensation from a silver medal in the men’s compound team event. The British men had good wins over Russia and Iran and only lost to Australia in the gold medal match by 231 to 233.
The World Cup Final is for just the top 7 archers in each category, with a wild card place for the host country. As the highest qualifying British lady Folkard should get the ladies’ recurve place. It is more uncertain who will be awarded the men’s compound place , but White must be a strong contestant.6 September 2010

Craig Bowley Selected for World Student Champs
Meriden recurve archer Craig Bowley has been selected to compete in the Great Britian University Team at the World University Championships in China between the 23rd and 26th Spetember. He will be competing both individually and as part of the Gents Recurve team. Unfortunately this event has a very small amount of Funding from both the GNAS and British Universities and College Sports (BUCS) so there are only 3 funded places for all disciplines and with Craig qualifying 4th overall he needs to pay £1000 for the privilege of representing his country. Craig said this is a once in a life time opportunity and definitely worth the cost. As a county let's wish Craig the best of luck.

Dennis Truslove
It is with great sadness that members of the Grand National Archery Society, Regional, County and Coventry Archery Club heard of Dennis’s recent death.
Dennis and with his wife Jean were very early members of the Coventry Archery Club, joining in 1953. Although Dennis enjoyed shooting he was never to be a champion, unlike Jean who was British Ladies Champion in 1960 and represented the UK in the International World Championships in Belgium in1958 , where the team achieved third place.
When Alderman Callow stepped down as Chairman of the Coventry Club Dennis was voted in as Chairman, a position he held for many years. Following this he became president until ill health forced his retirement.
Both Dennis and Jean gave a lot of time to the County of Warwickshire, serving on the committee. Jean selected archers for the County team, and Dennis was President of the County for some years.
Dennis travelled many miles with Jean with her shooting, which led to him be asked to take on the duties of an Archery Judge. He soon established himself as one of the leading Archery Judges and was a National Judge for probably longer that any other person, Judging National, Regional and County events, including crossbow. However in 1994 he had to retire from judging due to ill health and no longer having a car. He believed that if when the archers went home they had had a good day’s shoot and could not remember who had judged the event then he had done a good job.
Over the years Dennis built up a large display of archery memorabilia, which he used to take around to events, including the largest collection of cloth badges.
The boat and caravan exhibition invited archery to have displays and a have-a-go stall for the public to try archery which was good publicity. Dennis organised this on behalf of the Region and many clubs made up a rota to cover the days of the exhibition . This again is only one of many things Dennis did for the Sport of Archery.
Every year since Jean's death until he went into a home, Agnes and I had Dennis at our house on Boxing Day to enjoy our family’s company . Dennis saw our two children grow up. Although it is a long time now since he was on the archery fields Dennis is, and will still be, fondly remembered .

Field Success for Jacob Vick
Meriden's Jacob Vick has recently defended his GNAS (Under 15 Recurve) British Field Archery Title, in Northern Ireland (24 & 25 July). The 2 x 24 Mixed Target course provided some interesting shots, through avenues of trees, into dense undergrowth and from the top of a scaffolding tower!
Jacob shot consistently throughout the 2 day shoot scoring 289 on the first day and 278 on the second, his combined score, 567, placed him first with second place scoring 531.
Following his exploits in Northern Ireland he travelled to Dahn, in Germany, to compete at the IFAA (International Field Archery Association) World Field Archery Championships (2nd to 6th August). Over the 5 days of competition his accumulated score put him in 2nd place in the Junior Gent Freestyle Recurve (under 17) category - he received his Silver medal on his 15th Birthday!

World Cup Silver for Folkard

Folkard and Godfrey
after the presentation ceremony
Warwickshire’s double Olympian Naomi Folkard returned from the third leg of the Archery World Cup in Ogden (Utah, USA) yesterday with a silver medal. Folkard and Larry Godfrey (Cleeve) made up the two-archer mixed recurve team which put in a great effort fighting through to a very tough final against world dominating Koreans.
Although they were ranked eleventh after the qualification round, on the way to the gold final they beat India (ranked 6) 147 to 144, Spain (ranked 14) 141 to 135, and Russia (ranked 7) 144 to 142. A gold medal final against the Korean pair, Moon Jung Kim (ladies’ individual gold medallist) and Jin Hyek Oh (men’s individual silver medallist) was always going to be tough, but 15 minutes before the match storm clouds circled the stadium, a strong wind got up and shooting became exceedingly difficult. The Korean pair were always on top, after taking a one point lead in the first of four ends. This was stretched to seven points at the half way stage. Both women struggled with the wind, which became increasingly difficult. Thanks largely to two 10s from Godfrey in the third end the British deficit was held at seven points. In the fourth and final end the British pair with a last ditch effort pulled back two points, but gold went to Korea by 134 to 129. It was nevertheless a great effort by the GB pair to win silver, the only medals going to GB archers at this event.
In the individual ladies competition Folkard was unlucky to go out to Russian, Erdyniyeva to finish 17th=. On the new scoring system for individual events, of points for winning an end of 6 arrows, Folkard went out by 4 points to 2. This was despite having a total arrow score for the match of 164 to Erdyniyeva’s 160. Godfrey also finished 17th=.10 August 2010
Warwickshire Archers Bid For Places in Leamington Spa Grand Final
Two Warwickshire archers have all but ensured their places in the Grand Final of the 2010 Archery GB National Series, to be held on September 12th in Leamington’s Jephson Gardens. They are Leamington’s recurve archer Naomi Folkard and Rugby compound Chris White, who won their sections of the Andover Double FITA Star event at the weekend.
Folkard, fresh back from winning the silver medal in the World Field Archery Championships in Visegrad, Hungary, returned to target archery at the two day Andover event (the fourth of five legs of the GB National Series) to set a new national record (subject to ratification) for the double ladies’ FITA. For the ladies FITA round of 12 dozen arrows (3 dozen at each of 70, 60, 50 and 30 metres) she scored 1330 on Saturday and 1313 on Sunday to give a combined total of 2643 which put 5 points on the national record which she herself holds. Amy Oliver (Dearne Valley) 2580 and Louise Colville (Mole Valley) 2569 took second and third places respectively.
White won the compound men’s competition with 1394 and 1387 for his gents FITA rounds (3 dozen at each of 90, 70, 50 and 30 metres) to amass a total of 2781 for the two days. Hard on his heals were Liam Grimwood (Blackthorn) 2778 and Duncan Busby (Blackthorn) 2772.
Folkard, who was born in Leamington and is a former pupil of Myton School, will be delighted if she can make the National Series Final in her home town. She herself suggested the prestigious Jephson Gardens venue, voted Best Park in Britain 2004. She said: “I have shot in the park before for an exhibition. It was popular then, and I’m sure the finals, offering exciting competition to watch, will attract a large public crowd, and help boost the profile of archery in Leamington and beyond.” Leamington has a very long association with the sport of archery, with the sport being enjoyed as far back as 1834 on a portion of the now Jephson Gardens, then known as Newbold Archery Ground.

Silver for Warwickshire Archers at World Field Champs

Finals at Visegrad Castle
Two Warwickshire recurve archers, Naomi Folkard (Leamington) and Jon Shales (‘V’ Archers), represented GB at the World Field Champs held last week in Visegrad, Hungary. Both came back with silver medals.
Shales, world field archery champion 12 years ago, and Folkard, field archery bronze medallist at the World Games in 2009 and at the world field archery championships in 2006, both made light of the difficult hilly and partially wooded course in Visegrad, and despite the very hot conditions shot well throughout the week. The competition involved 24 targets at unmarked distances and 24 at marked distances, followed by 2 elimination rounds, and then a head-to-head semi final to determine the contestants for the head-to-head medal matches. The latter were held in the Visegrad Castle itself, on 4 very tricky targets, which were at different distances, all uphill (some steeply and across slopes). Varying swirling winds around the castle added to the difficulty. Throughout the event archers shot 3 arrows at each target.
Folkard scored 347 on the unmarked course, which put her in third place at the end of the first day, behind Italian Jessica Tomasi, the gold medallist in 2004 and 2008, on 357, and Carol Ferriou (France) 349. Her score for the marked distances 320 was a little disappointing, but with a combined score of 667 for the two days she qualified in 3rd place, behind Tomasi 697 and GB team mate Amy Oliver 668. In the first elimination round for the top 16 competitors, Folkard was fourth with 164 for 12 marked targets. In the second elimination round, with 111 for 8 marked targets, she was fourth, equal with Oliver, but in a single arrow shoot-off against Oliver she earned a place in the semi-final. Folkard scored 47 for 4 marked targets, beating the favourite, Tomasi, to win a place in the gold medal match against Christine Bjerendal (Sweden). Bjerendal is the daughter of legendary Swedish archer Goran, multiple time world field champion, and herself a former European field champion. At the half way point in the final match the two ladies were on equal scores, but on the third target Bjerendal turned up the heat putting in three perfect 6s which Folkard could not match, and she went on to win by 53 to 45. Tomasi took bronze.
Competition in the men’s recurve event was fierce. Shales narrowly went into first place at the end of day 1 with 379. Italy’s Michel Frangilli also had 379 and Vic Wunderlee (USA), just one point behind, finished third with 378. After the second day scores opened up a bit and Shales dropped to fourth place with a total of 721. Wunderlee and Frangilli both on 742 and Sebastian Rohrberg (Germany), the reigning world champion, 724 qualified ahead. In the first elimination round Shales just earned a place in the next round when he took 8th place with 166. In the second round, with 117, he tied with Ishizu (Japan) and Wunderlee for 4th place, but in a single arrow shoot-off for a place in the semi final, he won through. In the semi-final Shales did well to beat Frangilli 58 to 55. However he was unable to match fellow GB team mate Alan Wills, and with 51 to 54 had to settle for silver.
Folkard is primarily a target archer whose main objective is to secure a medal at her third Olympics in London. After a shoulder operation at the end of 2008 she is still working hard on changes to her shooting technique in order to minimise the stress on her shoulder, and currently feels that she can still improve significantly. With regard to her performance in Visegrad she said: “I was delighted with my performance - it was a real confidence booster. I love the relaxed atmosphere of field archery, and every target is a new challenge, from which I am learning things which are helping with target archery.” Folkard is very grateful for sponsorship by Recaro, the manufacturers of quality car seats, which helps her devote maximum time to archery.

Local Archers Aid England Victory at Euronations
Leamington’s recurve archer Naomi Folkard and Rugby’s compound Chris White played a significant part in England’s victory in the Euronations team event held last week in Dublin.
As regular members of the GB team, both Folkard and White are normally disqualified from shooting for England. However, this ban has been lifted for the Commonwealth Games in India in October, and the Euronations match was a training event in preparation for this.
In difficult windy conditions English archers took 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in all four disciplines, ladies and gents recurve, and ladies and gents compound. With the three highest scoring archers from each discipline making their national team, England had a storming victory. They amassed a total of 15801 points, with Ireland 2nd on 14869 and Scotland 3rd on 14864. Northern Ireland and Wales trailed well behind.
Athens Olympic bronze medallist Alison Williamson (Long Mynd), back on form, topped the ladies’ recurve section with 1291 for the Ladies’ FITA round of 12 dozen arrows (3 dozen at each of 70, 60, 50 and 30 metres. Folkard was second with 1276 and Amy Oliver (Dearne Valley) third with 1248. Charlotte Burgess (Bruntwood), a member of the GB team in Beijing and the England reserve for the Commonwealth Games, with 1233, was pushed into fifth place by Maeve Reidy (Ireland) on 1240.
England’s Liam Grimwood (Blackthorn) topped the compound men’s scores for the gent’s FITA (3 dozen arrows at each of 90, 70, 50 and 30 metres) with 1364. White took second place with1352. Andy Rikunenko (Redditch), close on his heels with 1351 took 3rd place and Duncan Busby (Blackthorn) was 4th.

Folkard & White Win Places at Commonwealth Games
Leamington’s Olympic recurve archer Naomi Folkard and Rugby’s compound Chris White last weekend secured their places to shoot for England at the Commonwealth Games in Dehli in October.
Both are regular members of the GB team and normally are excluded from shooting for England because of this. However, an exception to this rule is being made for the Commonwealth Games.
The selection process involving 3 days of competition for all those meeting the high score criteria (5 recurve ladies and 8 compound men) was completed over 2 days last weekend at Warwickshire’s Meriden club. The 3 days of shooting involved a total of 4 FITA 70 rounds and 3 ‘round robins’, all with complicated scoring involving bonus and minus points. Competition was intense. Both Folkard and White, with the advantage of a lead established on the first day’s competition at Lilleshall National Sports Centre in April, finished in the top 3 in their disciplines assuring themselves of a place in Dehli.
Folkard, who also participates in field archery, has recently been selected to represent Great Britain at the World Field Championships in Visegrad, Hungary in July. Her scores at field shoots over the season put her at the top of the selection table. It may be a small GB team as funding is available for only 8 archers covering all disciplines.

Craig Bowley shows form at Evesham
At the recent opening event of the Archery GB national series event at Evesham on the 16th May Craig Bowley from Meriden finished the day in 2nd place, Craig qualifies in 10th place with a score of 601 and then won the first 4 matches convincingly which put him in the semi finals where he was to face Simon Terry, Craig didn’t let Simon deter him though and easily beat him winning the semi’s 6-2, unfortunately after taking the initial lead against Larry Godfrey in the final, Larry came back to win the match 6-4. This puts Craig second in the overall race for places at the Grand Final in September. Other archers from Warwickshire in Gents Recurve are Lee Williams (17th), Stuart Wood-Edens (33rd ), junior archer Jacob Vick (33rd) and Bob Lowe (33rd). In the Gents compound category Adam Ravenscroft qualified in an impressive 3rd place with a score of 668, but was unfortunately knocked at in the second round so was placed 17th , Chris White finished in 5th place, Colin Geenes (8th), John Robbins (9th), Gavin Shaw (17th) as well as Brett Walker that also finished 17th. In the ladies Recurve Naomi qualified in 1st place with a score of 619 but was unfortunately knocked out in the ¼ final to finish in 8th place and in the ladies Compound Phillipa Lowe finished in 17th place.

Flying Start to Season for Folkard

Folkard at the 2009 World Games in Korea
Leamington’s two times Olympic archer made an excellent start to the outdoor season winning the ladies recurve competition at the Meriden Archery Club’s Easter pre-season FITA Star Tournament with an excellent score. With the first GB and Commonwealth Games selection shoots coming up in mid April, the event attracted a large number of GB and England archers and competition was fierce. The shoot also incorporated the Warwickshire county trials and therefore many of the best county archers competed.
The competition involved the FITA round of 12 dozen arrows, with 3 dozen at each of 4 distances (90, 70, 50 and 30 metres for the men and 70, 60, 50 and 30 metres for the ladies and juniors). Although the variable winds were tricky at times, and the ground was very wet underfoot, it remained dry throughout and shooting conditions were fairly good.
Folkard finished on 1308, with a massive lead over Rebecca Martin (Trent Valley) second on 1195, and Joann Lunt (Saints and Sinners) 1194. Folkard, who has been training hard over the winter making changes to both her equipment and shooting technique, was pleased with the result.
The top scores in all sections were high. Former Olympic bronze medallist Simon Terry (Chorley) achieved a magnificent 1348 in the men’s recurve; GB top ranked compound for many years Chris White (Rugby) shot 1394; and Andrea Gales (Woking) a GB lady compound scored 1373.
Local archers shooting were:

Success for Warwickshire Archers at National Indoor Champs
Warwickshire’s top internationals compound Chris White (Rugby) and Naomi Folkard (Leamington) both put in excellent performances last weekend at the National Indoor Championships at Lilleshall National Sports Centre.
Archers shot the FITA 18 round of 5 dozen arrows at a small 3 spot face over 18 metres, which was followed by a head to head knock out competition for the top 32 qualifiers in each category.
Folkard qualified in first place with an excellent 570. Fellow Olympians Charlotte Burgess (Bruntwood) and Alison Williamson (Long Mynd) qualified in second and third places respectively with 567 and 558. In the head to head elimination rounds of 12 arrow matches, Folkard was the highest scoring archer in every round up to the gold final. She beat Ashleigh McCloud (LoughboroughUniv) 114 to 88, Jenna Derraven (Gwent) 114 to 111, Emma Downie (Edinburgh Univ) 115 to 107, and Amy Oliver (Dearne Valley) 115 to111. This brought her into the gold medal match against Burgess, which finished 110 to 113. Although disappointed with second place, Folkard was pleased with her day’s shooting as she was using new equipment and has recently made changes in shooting technique in preparation for the coming outdoor season. Third place went to Becky Martin (Trent Valley), and Williamson finished fifth.
White qualified in fourth place with 586, behind James Bingham (Birstall) 590, Andy Rikunenko (Redditch) 590 and Philip Glover (Mayflower) 588. He shot extremely well in all his matches, beating Paul Athersmith (Telford) 117 to 112, Ben Hunt (Cleve) 118 to 108, and Jon Nott (Wyre Forest) 119 to 116. In the semi final, after tying on 117 against Bingham, he went through on a single arrow shoot off. He shot against Rikunenko for gold, winning 118 to 115. Bingham finished with bronze.
Another local archer, Philippa Lowe (Meriden) was competing in the ladies’ compound competition. Formerly a recurve archer who shot regularly for England, Lowe has recently converted to compound, and did well to qualify in 20th place. Unfortunately she lost her first match against Lynda Oliver (Dearne Valley) 111 to 113, which maintained her position in 20th place.

Good Shooting at County Championships
The senior County Indoor Championships were held yesterday, in conjunction with both the County and Regional Junior Indoor Championships, at the Harry Mitchell Sports Centre in Warley. The national record status event, involving the Portsmouth round of 5 dozen arrows shot at a 60 cm face over 20 yds, was well attended by West Midlands archers, and, although no records were broken, some good scores were shot.
The senior championship winners were, for the ladies, recurve Natalie Gee (Sutton Coldfield) and compound Janette Ross (Meriden) and for the men, recurve Brian Tustin (Leamington) and compound Adam Ravenscroft (Bowflights, Birmingham). Ravenscroft set a new county record with 592, which is only one point off the current national record.
The junior county champions were Caitlin McCarthy (Leamington) and Jacob Vick (Meriden).
The Quantum club from Handsworth, Birmingham, was particularly well represented at the event, its team including 19 youngsters, most of whom are pupils at King Edwards School in Handsworth. Some are relative novices, but they all shot well and a considerable number earned awards.

Leamington's Folkard Doing Well Indoors
Leamington’s Olympic archer Naomi Folkard has been maintaining competition practice indoors over the indoor season, with good results.
Last month she won the Welland Valley FITA 18 (5 dozen arrows at 40cm 3 spot face over 18 metres) with an excellent 568. She also won the Sherwood Archers FITA 18 event with 567, ahead of fellow GB internationals Amy Oliver (Dearne Valley) 533 and Michelle Kiddy (Dearne Valley) 526. In her second shoot at Sherwood, which did not count in the competition, Folkard scored 574.
Last week she competed in Nimes in a FITA 18 and head to head event, which was well attended by archers from all parts of Europe and USA.
